Miller’s book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, which explores how Black men have reclaimed and redefined the concept of the dandy throughout history.

Dandyism, originally defined as “a man unduly devoted to style,” has deep roots in Black culture, particularly during the Enlightenment period. The Met’s release explains:
“Dandyism offered Black people an opportunity to use clothing, gesture, irony, and wit to transform their given identities and imagine new ways of embodying political and social possibilities.”
